the Spring 2009 edition of Tulane Medicine.

An abstract of the study by Sandeep Gautam, MD, Jonathan
Menachem, BA, Sudesh K Srivastav, PhD, Patrice Delafontaine,
MD and Anand Irimpen, MD, "Did Hurricane Katrina Affect The
Incidence Of Acute Coronary Syndromes In New Orleans?" will be presented at the American College
of Cardiology Scientific Sessions 2009 in Orlando, Florida on March
29, 2009.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
To the School of Medicine Community,
I am pleased to announce that as of July 1, 2008, Dr Patrice Delafontaine
will be the Director of the new Tulane Heart and Vascular Institute. We
believe the formation of this Institute will give us the creative edge
to aggressively grow and develop our 3 missions of clinical service, education
and research. The Institute will house all clinical, programmatic, educational
and research activities of the cardiology, cardiovascular surgery and
vascular faculty and staff. Interventional radiology will also participate
in clinical program development. Academic appointments will be within
the sponsoring home departments.
The purpose of the Institute is to foster synergies among the related
specialties to promote growth and innovation as well as efficiency of
operation. Dr. Delafontaine will continue to work closely with the
Chairs of Medicine and Surgery to enhance our services and establish our
position as the acknowledged regional leader in the field.

About the Tulane University Heart
and Vascular Institute
The Tulane University Heart and Vascular
Institute encompasses leading clinical, educational and research
programs for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. The
clinical program offers a broad and comprehensive array of cardiovascular
services including advanced interventional cardiology, arrhythmia and atrial
fibrillation management, heart failure and cardiac transplantation, cardiac
surgery, and peripheral vascular disease management. Cutting-edge diagnostic
imaging capabilities, including 64-slice CT angiography, allow for the
early detection and prevention of cardiovascular disease and its complications.
Tulane University Hospital and Clinic is the only accredited Chest Pain
Center in the state of Louisiana.
Together with the School of Public Health, the Tulane Heart and Vascular Institute
for more than 40 years has been the site of the world-renowned Bogalusa
heart study, a population-based longitudinal study of cardiac risk factors
under the direction of Dr. Gerald Berenson. The Institute, under the directorship
of Dr. Patrick Delafontaine, is the recipient of two large NIH grants to
conduct cardiovascular research for the next five years.
