Associate Program Director:
Salman A. Arain, MD

Program Coordinator:
Joy Sonnier

The Tulane University School of Medicine Cardiology Fellowship is a three-year program. The goal of the Tulane University Cardiology Fellowship training program is to train Cardiology fellows in the practice of clinical Cardiology; to teach the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, attitudes and values that are essential to the practice of Cardiology. As well, we strive to foster humanistic and ethical attributes in our trainees and encourage an appropriate balance between academic endeavors and clinical service.

Tulane Cardiology fellows do rotations at Tulane University Hospital and Clinics in New Orleans, Veterans Affairs Medical Center New Orleans and the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans - University Hospital Campus. Clinical rotations include Cardiac Catheterization, Non-Invasive Imaging, Electrophysiology, Cardiology Consults/CCU and Congestive Heart Failure. The amount of time spent at each institution is determined by the particular needs of the individual and the desire to provide a balanced training experience. In addition, trainee participation in basic or clinical cardiovascular research is highly encouraged. During the program, the trainee will move from participation in procedures under very close supervision to independent activity.

About the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Training Program

Program Director:
Anand M. Irimpen, MD

Program Coordinator:
Joy Sonnier

The Tulane University School of Medicine Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is a one-year program. The goal of the Tulane University Interventional Cardiology Fellowship training program is to train Interventional Cardiology fellows in the practice of Interventional Cardiology; to teach the knowledge, skills, clinical judgment, attitudes and values that are essential to the practice of Interventional Cardiology. We strive to foster humanistic and ethical attributes in our trainees and encourage an appropriate balance between academic endeavors and clinical service.

The training includes didactic conferences, weekly case conferences, and individual fellow and faculty clinical patient reviews (pre- and post-procedure) to discuss risk, benefit, results, treatment strategies and complications. Trainees also assist in teaching diagnostic fellows, medicine residents and other student groups. Included in the training is an opportunity to lead the case discussions at cath conference.

Program emphasis is placed on giving fellows ample opportunity to learn appropriate technical skills for safe coronary and peripheral intervention using multiple devices including rotational atherectomy, balloons, stents, filter devices, and to advance and refine diagnostic cath skills. Ample coronary procedures are available to meet required procedure volumes.

Tulane Interventional Cardiology fellows do rotations at Tulane University Hospital and Clinics in New Orleans, and the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans - University Hospital Campus. Equal amount of time is spent at each institution. In addition, trainee participation in basic or clinical cardiovascular research is highly encouraged. During the program, the trainee will move from participation in procedures under very close supervision to independent activity.
